Why Don't I Ever Hear About People Recommending a Five Year Old 911 Turbo S

I’ve been meaning to ask this for a while. It’s pretty common knowledge that the 911 Turbo S is the pinnacle and perfection of the everyday supercar. So why don’t I ever hear people recommending them? A 2012 Turbo S Coupe or Cabriolet can be found with less than 30,000 miles for just under $100,000! I mean if you aren’t leasing at that level then is there a better car for $100k than a five year old Turbo S?

I just don’t think Oppo talks much about cars that are $100k used. People love these cars, though. I have a friend with one - it’s a base Turbo Cab - he obsesses over the damn thing. It’s not impossible to find them with manual transmissions, either, which is nice. Most cars that stack up against it were already going full-auto by 2012.

It depends on what you’re looking for. A late model S-class is more luxurious, a brand new GS F will be cheaper to own, and a Hellcat provides more tire-frying hooning, but if you want a balanced sports car, it’s hard to do better than a 997.2 Turbo S.

I want you to take a good hard look at the demographics of people on Oppo, and how many:

-are youths who can’t drive

-are young adults who can’t afford a car due to other obligations

-are people who can afford a vehicle, but go for one(s) that suit their needs and price range

-are people who can afford a $100k used car (and most likely as a secondary car)

That last category is probably pretty small. So pardon us for not recommending it.

Not to mention, it will straight-up whip any of the cars you mentioned on any track, INCLUDING a drag strip (lookin at you, Hellcat).

I think it’s hard to recommend something once it’s been superseded. Which is exaggerated for Porsche since all the cars are obviously small evolutions on each other. Similar to how nobody cares about the Mclaren 12C since it got replaced by better evolutions - no matter how cheap or good it is.

Absolutely, but it doesn’t have massaging thrones like the S-class, it doesn’t have the warranty and Toyota-like maintenance schedule of the GS F, and it doesn’t make the noises or the smoke the Hellcat does. In the real world with crests and dips and off-camber bumps, there is nothing faster than a Porsche Turbo S, but it’s not a machine for everyone.

I think most people are either obsessed with the new ones or the vintage ones. Slightly used isn’t sexy.

It’s the most boring “supercar” on the used market. A GT-R is just as fast and more practical. A new Corvette Z06 or Viper is faster, sounds better, and looks better. An R8 actually looks exotic, and sounds better (plus gated manual). And you can get a first-gen Gallardo for $100,000. Any Jalop would look for something more racey from Porsche like a GT3 or GT4.

Both my dad and his boss considered buying used 911 Turbos. They both ended up with Audi S8's because most people with the means to drop $100,000 want a practical, understated Autobahn stormer as a daily driver and a designated sports car for weekend use. The 911 Turbo sits in that awkward no-man’s-land between a super car and luxury car.

Part of why I like Oppo is that Oppo pretty much ignores everything over 60k. I’m okay with that. Even being reasonably successful and making good money and having no kids, there is just no way I am going to be looking at cars like that. And frankly, I am over caring about them. I’d rather look at and talk about dirty trucks, 20 year old cheap roadsters, and 6 year old motorcycles.
